Maringotka was formed in 2009 as a project by a group of enthusiasts dedicated to classic gypsy jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt. Starting out by performing covers, the band gradually developed its own original compositions, drawing inspiration not only from gypsy swing but also from bossa nova and blues.

In 2018, they released their debut album, Poza Bučky, featuring compositions by guitarists Róbert Schranz and Juraj Havlík, complemented by the violin of Pali Matej and the double bass of Robert Ragan Jr.

The years that followed saw the band members scattered across the globe—to New York, Copenhagen, and Berlin—before the pandemic further interrupted their activities. During that time, a collection of new compositions gradually took shape, and at the end of 2024 the band recorded their second album, Maringotka II, which was released a year later.

Their fascination with and inspiration from gypsy jazz and bossa nova remain at the heart of their sound. Robert Ragan Jr. also contributed as a composer, and the album features guest appearances by saxophonist Michaela Turcerová (who also performed on the band’s debut album) and percussionist Jakub Havlík.

Maringotka’s nomadic music feels equally at home in an intimate jazz club as it does aboard an ocean liner carrying cultural influences back and forth across the Atlantic.
