STEFANIK Suita Almanach site-specific

SLOVAKIA
21. 9. 2025 (Sunday)

The project STEFANIK is the work of composer, musician, and inventor Martin “Majlo” Štefánik, whom many will remember as the leader of the ambitious and once highly successful group Ľudové Mladistvá. Their 2018 album Viete ako… was nominated for several categories at the Radio_Head Awards, and the band performed at many major festivals in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Martin Štefánik originally studied composition at the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU) in Bratislava, later shifting his focus to stage music (Astorka, Folk_Lab). He is currently studying at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (VŠVU), where he develops post-digital musical instruments.

In 2023, he attracted attention with the experimental work Suita Almanach, a cycle of five compositions inspired by folk calendar customs and drawing on the archetypal sounds of traditional Slovak instruments (such as the fujara, whistles, jaw harps, cimbalom, and more).

Its concert premiere—featuring performances by Martin Štefánik, Jonatán Pastirčák, Nina Kollárová, and Terézia Jacová—will offer not just a musical but also a spatial experience: the listener will be immersed in layers of sound that originate not only from the instruments themselves but also from their physical presence and movement. The result is a sound-spatial structure in which materials from various temporal and cultural dimensions intertwine.
