The women’s singing group Izvor was founded in Bratislava with the aim of cultivating and presenting Serbian folk music in Slovakia. After a short break, the group reunited in 2023. Its current lineup includes Mila Gundelj, a native of Novi Sad, founder and artistic director, graduate of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava in music theory and music pedagogy, along with four other singers — Zorana Bandziová, Renata Ribar, and Anita Ribar Valah from Serbia, and Marina Branković from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. All members have been living in Slovakia for many years and have established families here. Some songs, performed in multi-part a cappella arrangements, are specially adapted for the ensemble, while much of the repertoire is based on ethnomusicological transcriptions. This approach is reflected in the group’s name — Izvor means “spring” (of a river) but also “authentic folk music.” Come and drink straight from the source with Izvor!
